Headspace is more than just a meditation app; it’s your go-to resource for a happier, healthier mind. From guided meditations to one-on-one mental health coaching, Headspace offers a range of features designed to help you achieve mental wellness. In this article, we will explore everything Headspace offers, who it is for, its benefits, and how it stands out from the competition.
Overview:
Headspace is a comprehensive mental health and wellness app designed to help users improve their mental health through guided meditation, mindfulness practices, sleep aids, and personalized coaching. With over 500+ guided meditations and a variety of programs tailored for stress relief, better sleep, and overall mental clarity, Headspace is a one-stop solution for those looking to enhance their mental well-being.
It was founded in 2010 by Andy Puddicombe, a former Buddhist monk, and Rich Pierson, a creative strategist, to make meditation accessible to everyone. Since then, Headspace has grown to become one of the most popular apps for mindfulness and meditation, with over 70 million downloads worldwide.
Key Features:
- Daily Guided Meditations: Over 500 guided meditations, from basic mindfulness sessions to advanced practices, designed to help users build a consistent mindfulness routine. Each session ranges from 3 to 20 minutes, catering to different levels and schedules.
- Sleep Sounds & Meditations: The app offers sleepcasts (narrated stories designed to lull you to sleep), relaxing soundscapes, and bedtime meditations to promote better sleep quality. Users can customize sleep experiences with sounds of rain, ocean waves, or soft music.
- Stress Relief Exercises: Headspace includes a variety of breathing exercises, meditation sessions, and mental health coaching to help users manage daily stress, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm.
- One-on-One Mental Health Coaching: Personalized support is available from certified mental health coaches who offer guidance, strategies, and accountability to help users achieve their mental health goals.
- Progress Tracking & Reminders: The app includes tools to monitor your mental health journey, set goals, track progress, and receive daily reminders for meditation and mindfulness exercises.
- Mindful Movement: Offers yoga sessions, guided runs, and fitness programs designed to enhance the connection between the mind and body, integrating physical exercise with mindfulness techniques.
How It Works:
Headspace offers a user-friendly platform where you can select various meditation sessions, mindfulness exercises, and sleep aids tailored to your personal goals. After downloading the app, users create a profile and select their areas of focus, such as stress reduction, better sleep, or improved focus.
Based on these selections, the app recommends daily meditation and mindfulness practices, which users can schedule as per their convenience. The app also offers one-on-one coaching sessions with certified mental health coaches, allowing for personalized guidance and support. Users can set reminders for daily practices, track their progress, and adjust their goals as needed to align with their mental health needs.

Nathan Smeltzer | Please make a 10 minute option for semi-guided meditation. There's a 5 and 15 minute option but no 10 minute option. Every other version of this app seems to have this option but the Android version and I'm unsure why. I even contacted support and they said they would work on it. But it seems like a simple fix. Also, navigation is a bear. Too many taps to find certain classes. | 4/5⭐ |
Ard Fantasy | I wanted to try this app for a month, but I can only buy a subscription per month. So i did that and then cancelled my subscription. But the cancellation process made go through multiple steps of "are you sure", "are you absolutely sure", "but you will miss out" only to send me to another page entirely. Quite atrocious. The lessons themself are fine though | 3/5⭐ |
J. J. Thompson | To cut to the chase, you should download this app and start with the foundation pack ASAP. I can't tell you how much this app has helped me. The reason why I am not giving 5-stars is because the search is quite poor and it's often hard to find what you want, which can be very frustrating. But just to emphasise, the positives vastly outweigh the negatives. And the people that work for Headspace are always so helpful and friendly. I would give 4.75 stars if I could! | 4/5⭐ |
Kaysoph | This is a very useful app!The app that I chose to review is called Headspace, and it is a meditation app that helps manage stress by showing mindfulness excercises, and offers information on how to manage other things such as anxiety or worry. This app did an amazing job at helping me be more mindful throughout the day. In the "Headspace library", there were tabs for certain scenarios like "navigating injustice, reframe stress and relax, mindful money, anger/sadness/growth, mindful eating, and guide to sleep,". Each tab had different podcasts and meditation methods that corresponded to that subject. I enjoyed using this app because as a person who worries often, this tool allowed me to take time out of my day to clear my head and do something that betters my mental health. This app is relevant to abnormal psychology because it includes ways to manage anxiety and worry. Although it is not an app that diagnoses or properly treats symptoms of anxiety, it does relieve some worry by the various methods used in the app; it helps people who may want to feel better, but may not be ready to see a professional, don't have access to proper mental healthcare, or wants to try something quick that is available by simply pulling out their phone. Overall, this app was a game-changer for me as freshman in college, and it is a great way to meditate and reflect, all while teaching me how to manage my constant worry I feel throughout my day. | 5/5⭐ |
Estevan Diaz | It’s a drug in a wayIt was easy to go through life unaware of the benefits of meditation, and aside from other people’s accounts of the practice, there wasn’t much to tempt me to try.But as soon as i tried it and put in considerable effort to be consistent*, i was hooked. I could feel the difference between a day i remembered to practice and when i forgot to. I loved it so much i started taking time throughout my day to practice, sometimes in my car/somewhere else by myself, or sometimes I’d take a minute to just focus on my breathing or the sounds around me or how my body felt. I was hooked. Then i went through a big life change occurred that i allowed to take me away from the practice for over a year and a half. Now I’m here to say that the me that was consistently practicing vs the me now are not even close. I’m struggling to get back in the swing of this because i desperately miss the emotional stability and overall sense of ease i had. I just need to take it one day at a time and remember that it’s a process, there’s no such thing as doing meditation perfectly. *tried setting a time to practice but couldn’t follow through so i resorted to just 5 minutes in the day, until i could consistently practice at a certain time in the morning, if that helps anyone w a similar struggle | 5/5⭐ |
